CHEMICAL CLEANSING SERIES: GET SAFE WITH YOUR PEDICURES THIS SUMMER!
To all my patients, friends, family and newcomers: Thanks for being patient with me on getting my blog up and running. Here is my first helpful post:
Summer is a time for sandals and pedicures. Make that pedicure beautiful and safe!
THREE CHEMICALS TO AVOID THAT CAN BE FOUND IN NAIL POLISH:
- Dibutyl Phthalate – Acts as a solvent and provides flexibility and shine to polish. Dibutyl phthalate is usually listed when it is one of the ingredients in nail polish. However, often phthalates are not listed in many products when they are components of fragrances. Fragrances don’t have to list all component ingredients on labels. Phthalates can interfere with normal sex hormones. They have been linked to feminization of mail fetuses and possibly to breast cancer, as well as proliferation of breast cancer tumor cells. They may also interfere with certain hormonal treatments for breast cancer. THESE ARE THE KINDS OF CHEMICALS IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE EXPOSED TO. Phthalates were recently taken out of several prominent nail polish brands.
- Toluene – Also a solvent. Can be a central nervous system toxin and cause headaches and dizziness. May be a toxin to reproductive systems.
- Formaldehyde – Known as a carcinogen. It is a respiratory and skin irritant. It may still be found in some nail polishes where it acts as a hardener.
In addition, it is highly recommended you use a non-acetone polish remover.
So! When you get your first sumer pedicure, follow these simple steps:
1) Read your ingredients.
2) Bring your own polish to a salon (try to find a salon that uses natural products and has good ventilation!)
……………..or better yet, do your own nails!
Here is a helpful guide on how to do your own pedicure which I carry to eliminate some of the worst chemical in beauty products:

As I continue these series on chemical cleasing, remember to educate yourself on everything you put inside your body as well as everything you use on the outside and in your every day life. Tell your friends and family about the things you have learned. Hopefully we can all cleanse ourselves of these terrible chemicals over time!
